TRIGGER WARNING: GORE AND DRUG USE

The world of drugs can be traced back many years before recorded history. Some drugs are used as medicine;others are abused for more unsavory means. However, it does not deter humans from making use of them. Each drug has its own composition and affects human health -- both physical and mental. Drug use is a very sensitive topic to bring up, but the manga and anime series Banana Fish highlights the conflicts that may happen due to the abuse and production of illicit drugs.

Banana Fish is a series that focuses on a gang leader’s journey through stopping a mafia boss from manufacturing and providing a street drug called banana fish. The effects of the drug usage can be seen throughout the entire series, but it won’t be explained in detail as the effects might be disturbing to some. The drug is known to be so powerful that the people who are under its influence can be controlled by the one administering the drug similar to mind-control. However, because the drug is so potent, most people under the influence of the drug suffer severe brain damage to the point where they are driven to death due to the major loss of brain functions. Other side effects to the drug include heightened aggression, sudden self-destructive behavior, and sporadic behavior. The victim may also experience a spike in blood pressure, and their pupils will start dilating.

Now that the definition and effects of this drug has been brought to light, the question of what the contents of this drug are arises.

The drug is described to take the form of a white, powdery substance that is similar to cocaine. It also comes in a liquid form and can be injected onto a person using a syringe. The banana fish is created by LSD, psilocybin (magic mushrooms), and a spontaneous mutation of

the Brugmansia alkaloid. The alkaloid is said to cause symptoms that mimic heart failure and paralysis to the autonomic nerves. LSD is said to be used for hallucinations and possible “trips” that include the significant amplification of emotions. This combination of substances does hypothetically make banana fish an extremely dangerous drug.

Banana fish is a drug that is related to an array of drugs in real life, specifically LSD. As banana fish is based on LSD, both drugs share similar properties. Like banana fish, LSD is a hallucinogen that is known to be one of the most potent drugs in circulation. They take the form of a colorless, odorless, and water-soluble substance. They are often seen as paper squares that are about 7mm in length. Additionally, they can also be seen as small tablets that are 2-3mm in diameter.

Like banana fish, people under the influence of LSDs experience dilated pupils, mild hypertension, and raised body temperature. People will see hallucinations as shapes will appear and disappear sporadically. Any flashes of color and the movement of objects are also typical effects of LSD. People also experience “trips” and flashbacks, but any severe ones are rare. Most serious side effects like the irrational acts of accidental deaths are also rare.

Both drugs are similar, but it goes to show how dangerous drugs can be. It is best to avoid taking drugs unless asked to by a medical professional. Besides the horrible psychological and biological side effects of the drugs, many other chemical substances that are used to create the drug are detrimental to human health, especially the liver. Drugs have the potential to negatively impact someone’s lifeWith that, it is essential to learn how to use drugs responsibly, whether they be medicinal or recreational.
